In 2001, Rock in Rio launched the social project “For a Better World” and assumed the responsibility of being, as well, a communication vehicle in favour of socio-environmental causes, by mobilizing people through music. The purpose was to show that small changes of attitude in daily life have a great impact on the planet – and reconsidering these attitudes can transform the future.One of the most important attitudes to take to help build a better world is to bet on sustainability. COMPENSATION: ZERO CARBONIn 2006, Rock in Rio assumed the commitment of not only being the largest festival in the world, but rather to be sustainable, as well. How? By offsetting the greenhouse effect gas emissions generated by the festival, especially carbonic gas (CO2), reaching the Zero Carbon index. This commitment is maintained until today.The Zero Carbon index is reached when the amount of emitted carbonic is equal to the amount absorbed by nature through plants, which use CO2 to perform photosynthesis. At the account of Rock in Rio, audited by a consulting firm, PwC, enter from emissions generated by displacement of bands, public, employees and goods and the energy consumed in the production until the consumption and generation of wastes during the festival.Thus, since 2006, over 40,000 trees were planted to offset emissions generated by Rock in Rio. Aside from this, Rock in Rio has already participated in environmental condition improvement projects of industries in Brazil.REDUCTION OF EMISSIONSBut if to compensate is important, to reduce emissions is essential. For this reason, in 2008 Rock in Rio started to adopt the Sustainability Action Plan, a guide with several measures to be adopted by all those involved in the execution of the festival to reduce environmental impact of Rock in Rio and to have to offset only the inevitable emissions.With this, the festival was able to reduce by over 21% the amount of emitted carbonic gas in the execution of 2010 Lisbon Rock in Rio in relation to the 2008 edition: there were 3,845 tons of CO2 in 2010, as compared to 4,686 tons two years before. In 2011, the objective is to reduce even more.One of the measures that most contribute to the reduction of CO2 emission is the use of collective transportation by the public to go to the festival and to return home: it is calculated that up to half of the emissions associated to the event occur in this displacement. For this reason, Rock in Rio launched the campaign “I AM GOING by Collective transports” (EU VOU de transportes públicos, in Portuguese) and elaborated a special transportation layout to encourage the public to leave the automobile at home when going to and from the festival in 2011. Rock in Rio was also the first event in Portugal with a bike park.WASTE ACTION PLANRock in Rio as a commitment also with the managing of the waste generated during the assembling, event and dissembling. For start construction of the stands is not allowed, also distributing flyers or any information using paper supports, partners are encouraged to reused materials or use recycled materials. During the event all the food leftovers that are in good conditions are donated to NGO’s that giveaway this food to poor people. There’s an effort in order to use rented structures or that can be used in other editions, all the materials that cannot be reused by the organization are donated to NGO’s, events, theatre companies, schools.All the waste collected goes to a plant were takes place a separation of all the waste that can be send to valorisation, this measure assures that more than 70% of the waste produced is valorised. WORKING CONDITIONSThere’s a special concern with the safety, security and welfare of all the employees, from the organization, sponsors and suppliers. ROCK IN RIO SUSTAINABLE ATTITUDE AWARDRock in Rio also seeks to involve partner entities, sponsors and suppliers of the festival in the adoption of sustainability best practices. For this purpose, since 2008 the festival promotes a contest which awards organizations that most contribute with the environment and social best practices.COMMITMENTWith these attitudes, Rock in Rio wants to reaffirm its commitment with sustainability and invite you, festival fan, to reconsider your daily attitudes to turn them more and more sustainable and in equilibrium with the natural, social and economic environment.
